We live in Norwich, not in Milton Keynes, so a lot of the communication with Tara is by skype and email. Our children respond to these moments of visual connection. Seeing Tara on the laptop bumps their energy up a few notches while at the same time drawing them in. They crowd round, raise their voices, shift and shuffle and gesticulate even more than normal – we can't really arrive at answers or even hear Tara's questions.
The answers usually come later. A period of calm may open up, one of the children will begin to fill it with a vivid narrative, or an idea with momentum, responding in some way to Tara's earlier question. As parents and collaborators, there's great pleasure for us in hearing our children come up with these things, in recording them, and in transmitting them back to Tara as answers to her question.
